Oscar nominations for a film made in Turku – Turku-based production company Filmgate Finland has created the visual effects for the film Living

Living, starring Bill Nighy, has received two Academy Award nominations, three BAFTA nominations and nine BIFA nominations. The film was co-produced by Filmgate Films and the VFX post-production was made by Filmgate Finland in Turku. West Finland Film Commission supported the VFX work.

West Finland Film Commission is delighted with the numerous nominations that Living has received. Turku-based production company Filmgate Finland created the VFX work for the film with its Swedish sister company Filmgate. The film received financial support from Business Finland and the West Finland Film Commission.

“It’s amazing that thanks to Filmgate Finland, Turku now has expertise in visual special effects on international standards. Turku region now offers services for film productions on a wider scale than ever before”, rejoices Film Commissioner Teija Raninen of the West Finland Film Commission.

Living tells about 1950s civil servant (Bill Nighy) who struggles with a life-threatening diagnosis and begins to find new meaning to his life. Based on the Japanese film Ikiru (1952), Living was written by Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro.

Living, a drama film produced by Stephen Woolley (The Crying Game, 1992 and Carol, 2015) and directed by Oliver Hermanus, has been nominated for the Academy Awards for Actor in a Leading Role and Adapted Screenplay. The film is set in 1950s London, which Turku-based Filmgate Finland was involved in creating for the big screen.

“It’s been amazing to get to co-produce a film like this and develop the Nordic co-operation. The VFX for Living was created in Gothenburg and Turku”, tells Sean Wheelan, producer and CEO of Filmgate Films.

In addition to Living, Filmgate Finland participated in four other international film productions last year. Currently in the works is The Great Escaper starring Michael Caine. Filmgate Finland is a production company that both produces films and offers VFX post-production services.
