Turku on the New York Times list of 52 Places to Love in 2021

Turku is one of the New York Times’ 52 favourite places to experience in 2021. The city was chosen from over 2000 reader proposals as the only Finnish city to be included.

Turku received high praise from the U.S.-born Avanti Chajed, who originally came to Turku to do a Master’s degree and is currently a doctoral student doing research on immigrant family experiences.

– I came to Turku in 2016 on a Fulbright scholarship, and I fell in love with the city on my first day. I was walking across a bridge over the Aura River — it was sunny, and the schools hadn’t quite started yet, so there were people all along the grassy areas on the riverbank. I remember thinking “I want to live here forever.”

Located in Southwest Finland, Turku is the country’s oldest city. It offers numerous attractions and activities, ranging from culinary experiences to fun stuff for families and enjoying one of the most beautiful archipelagos in the world.

From a professional standpoint, the Turku region is home to the most dynamic region in Finland, with over 22 000 companies in a wide range of fields and six institutes of higher education.
