Passenger traffic at Turku Airport is picking up speed during the autumn. The Turku Airport has serviced fright traffic and ensured the security of supply throughout the pandemic.

Air traffic’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic is picking up speed. AirBaltic’s flights between Turku and Riga start today. At first, the flights from Turku to Riga take place twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays from 5.20 am to 6.25 am, with flights from Riga to Turku happening on Wednesdays and Sundays from 11.30 pm to 12.35 am. The aircraft for these flights will be the Airbus A220-300 series jet planes, which seat 145 passengers.

– We are glad to be able to serve the Turku region’s passengers again and to offer our extensive network of continuation flights through the Riga Airport. If there is enough demand, we can increase our flights for this route, says AirBaltic Head of Sales Jan Nyholm.

– It is great news that airlines are coming back to the Turku Airport. AirBaltic’s direct route between Riga and Turku is very welcome. Many are itching to travel and want to see the world since they haven’t been able to do so for some time now, says Turku Airport manager Juha Aaltonen from the airport company Finavia Corporation.

The Turku Airport has been in business during the entire pandemic. Wizzair flies three times a week to Poland’s Gdansk and twice a week to Skopje in North Macedonia, and Air Leap’s flights between Turku and Mariehamn have gone on almost uninterrupted throughout the pandemic. Fright traffic and ensuring the security of supply have helped keep the airport running. More routes will open during the autumn. Wizzair is restarting its flights to Cyprus’ Larnaca, Lithuania’s Kaunas and Poland’s Krakow. Vacation flights departing from Turku by TUI and Tjäreborg are also on their way.

– Restarting commercial flights in the Turku region is crucial both for recreational travel and especially for the region’s business. Accelerating economic growth and the competitiveness of the region’s companies demands direct flights and face-to-face meetings. Many a contract and business deal go unsigned if remote connections are the sole means of interaction, says Niko Kyynäräinen, Director of Business and Economic Development at the City of Turku, emphasising the importance of having a regional airport.

– It is important to remember that flights to and from Turku are paramount to our region’s accessibility. In addition to commuters, the travel industry needs a robust network of flight routes. Promoting the archipelago’s stunning travel routes becomes much easier if we have direct flights from our neighbouring countries and Central Europe to Turku, says Antti Kirkkola, Liaison Manager at the City of Turku

When traveling to international destinations, using the Turku Airport’s routes is the best way to ensure the quality of the airport’s services, the extensiveness of its flight routes and its price level in the future.
