ULLEVI – New Business from Thermal Energy Storage

Duration: 1.1.2023 – 31.12.2025

Project partners: Turku Science Park Oy, Turku University of Applied Sciences, Åbo Akademi University

Funding: European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) 70%, internal financing 30%. Turku Science Park Ltd’s proportion of total funding 154 580 €

Project in a nutshell:: The ULLEVI project (Eng. New business from thermal energy storage) addresses the future challenges faced in matching the energy production and demand by producing new information, solutions, business potentials and innovations about thermal energy storage by developing an environment for demonstration, piloting, research, education, application and joint use.

The main focus areas of the Project are:

  1. Centre of competence and company networks
  2. Developing, building and co-innovating the use of an RDI environment
  3. Communication

The project will deepen the knowledge and competence in the field by improving the efficiency and credibility of carbon-neutral solutions, energy systems integration, as well as networking between the partners and stakeholders. ULLEVI project will support the sustainable growth, internationalization, and renewal of SMEs. The project will promote the climate change mitigation efforts and the development of self-sufficient, secure and resilient business life in South-West Finland. Simultaneously it will reduce EU’s dependence on imported energy sources. ULLEVI supports the government’s “Carbon neutral Finland 2035” strategy, particularly with respect to developments in the heating market, waste heat utilization (e.g., in district heating networks), R&D, innovations and competition as well as in securing the maintenance and supply. The developed knowledge and solutions on long-term thermal storage support Finland’s goal of carbon neutrality with respect to the transition to an electrification of the heating sector, including education of the future experts.

Duties of Turku Science Park Ltd.:

In this project, Turku Science Park Oy is building the thermal energy storage business ecosystem of South West Finland and is developing a national thermal energy storage forum/ecosystem.
The company’s main responsibility is Work Package 1, where the goal is to identify the actors in the innovation environment of the Turku region (universities, public sector and companies) that have expertise related to thermal energy storage. Some of the actors have been identified in the past, but a systematic review has not been done and the actors have not been actively brought together. The goal is to support companies in the development of thermal energy storage technology and related growth.
