Finland’s old capitol Turku is known for beautiful historic buildings and a stunning archipelago, but this autumn it transforms into a scene of horror in a new Swedish series called Cryptid. The young adult horror series is produced by Dramacorp Ab for Viaplay.

Cryptid takes place in a small Scandinavian town. As a chain of horrific and unexplainable events start to unfold, an ensemble of high school students will be forced to face their darkest fears in order to overcome a supernatural force feeding on chaos and the misery of men and women.

– Cryptid will be available around the Nordics in Viaplay. I believe the series has a lot of potential to become an international hit, says Teija Raninen, the film commissioner from the West Finland Film Commission. – The West Finland Film Commission works constantly to bring ambitious international productions like this to our region. And of course Finland’s production incentive is very important for these international productions as well.”

Cryptid will be dark, funny, and thrilling ride in the world of young adults. Cryptid is a mix of mystery, high school drama, and horror. The series will be unpredictable and exciting.

The series will be filmed in the Turku region in West Finland in early Autumn 2019, and it will be launched at MIPTV 2020. Finland’s production incentive, 25% cash rebate, had great importance in attracting the series to film in Finland. The production incentive was launched in 2017, and it has had a great effect in increasing Finland’s attractiveness as a shooting location for international series.

Cryptid will be directed by Swedish David Berron and Daniel di Grado. The main actors are young Swedish talents. Professional actors from Sweden and Finland will be seen in the other roles.

The West Finland Film Commission supports the series, as it films in the Turku region. The West Finland Film Commission markets the region to both international and national film and TV productions, and offers various services to the productions. The West Finland Film Commission is part of the Turku Business Region.
