The Turku-based drug delivery technology and drug development company DelSiTech Oy has completed a state-of-the-art cleanroom for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, where, for example, sterile products can be made in syringes for injections. The development of this facility is a great example of innovative cooperation between universities and companies in the region.
DelSiTech’s new cleanroom unit of about 100 m2 is located in the premises of Turku University of Applied Sciences in Kupittaa. In the past, the facility has also been used for pharmaceutical manufacturing, but for the last few years it has been used for teaching purposes by the University of Applied Sciences. The transformation of the premises into a manufacturing unit was carried out in close cooperation with Turku University of Applied Sciences.
“This project has been a model of effective cooperation between a company and a university. The cleanroom expertise and positive attitude of Turku University of Applied Sciences has been crucial in providing us with the manufacturing space,” says Lasse Leino, CEO of DelSiTech, in a company press release.
Through cooperation between companies and universities, we are able to develop new, innovative products in our region and bring them to the market, also internationally.

The completion of their own sterile manufacturing facility is a major milestone for DelSiTech.
“Our goal is to obtain a pharmaceutical factory licence for the manufacturing unit by the end of the year, after which we will be able to manufacture our own investigational medicinal products for clinical trials. This will significantly accelerate the development and commercialisation of DelSiTech’s own drug products and reduce our dependence on external contract manufacturers. At the same time, we will also offer a sterile product manufacturing service to our current and future partners. We believe that the expansion of our business into sterile manufacturing will significantly accelerate the company’s growth,” says Leino.
Tero Piispanen, Head of Health at Turku Science Park Oy, also sees the development of DelSiTech’s cleanroom as a great example of strong cooperation between universities and companies in the region.
“Through cooperation between companies and universities, we can develop new, innovative products in our region and bring them to the market, also internationally. This cooperation is one of the strengths of the Turku region,” says Piispanen.
Turku University of Applied Sciences has been cooperating with companies in the biotechnology sector for more than 20 years.
“The cooperation strengthens networking with companies in the sector, supports teaching and RDI activities and also fulfils the regional development mission of the university of applied sciences as laid down in the law,” says Raimo Pärssinen, special expert at Turku University of Applied Sciences.
